A cad U-joint?

That's one of them things that makes a "clickclackclickclack" noise at the front of my car at low speeds... I can't even describe how it sounds at high speed :P

Almost as mesmerizing as trying to knock a u-joint out of a drive shaft.

You could use some of this for those angles

This is why I wish I could've been an engineer. One of the most fascinating things I have ever seen is a set of gears of diminishing ratios all the way to pretty much 0.

There is no reason the U-joint should slow down and speed up on the right side if used correctly, I'm guessing it's outside of its designed range of motion and that's screwing with the motion.

And here we see why it's called a "U-joint" and not a "Constant Velocity Joint."

Please tell me there's a video somewhere of that thing in the picture you posted moving. I want to see that.

I'm an engineer and all I do all day long is email, Powerpoint presentations, and argue with people on the phone. If I want to play with gears I have to go home and get out my Legos.

Actually, that jerky motion is exactly why the CV joint exists. U-joints will have a uneven rotation that gets more severe with angle, most axles don't exceed an angle large enough worry about the sinusoidal action, but its there.

I kind of changed what I was saying mid-sentence and didn't catch it, I meant to say that the jerky motion shows it's outside the proper range of motion.
CV joints are fine, but Birfields are crappy unless beefed up.

meh, my birfs are doing great with ~140,000 on them.

I'll have to look for it. But if you are ever in San Francisco, this was at the Exploratorium.
